Well Dear Reader, flushed with the success of our trip to Giverny, and more by luck than judgement, I seem to have created a mini Monet garden at South Lodge Towers. It’s just ever so slightly chaotic but smells wonderful now that all the Sweet Peas and Lavenders are in bloom and the Hollyhocks are looking magnificent.
The weather (if I dare mention such a thing) has been a help and a hindrance in equal measure. The flowers and veg are enjoying the sunshine but perhaps not the relentless heat and I am not enjoying the 6.30am wake up call to water it all! Having gone to all the effort of planting though, I am feeling some sort of serious maternal duty boundness to haul my ass out of bed at an early hour and get on with it.
We have been eating broad beans now for about three weeks (not EVERY night or we’d be entirely bean’d out) and they have been lovely stirred into an unseasonal lamb shank casserole or raw in salads or slipped out of their casings and steamed lightly. We had a lovely dinner the other evening of a spinach and feta pie in filo pastry, griddled courgettes and spuds from the garden followed by our strawberries which have been loving the hot weather. *smug face*
The courgettes are an Italian variety and have done really well and I’m hoping for great things from their tomato counterparts. We have also had cherries by the bowl full which had to be picked quick smart before the marauding blackbirds had the lot!
And this year, for the first year since buying the plants, the gooseberries have been prolific and already turned into jars of delight for spreading on your toast or ‘fooling’ with.
I have felt very inspired and motivated this year where the garden is concerned – perhaps I’m entering old age (!) and you can tell as it’s looking lovely if a touch untidy in places. The EBG was round at the weekend and took great pleasure in pointing out all the things she’d been involved in planting in those cold and wet Spring months when we thought it would never stop raining. But stop it did and the heatwave has been just the thing to perk us up. Me and the garden.
