And so Dear Reader we are returned from les vacances. And mighty fine they were too!
Our 1700km epic trip began in Bordeaux. Well, actually it began with a trip down the autoroute in the wrong direction, much huffing from the driver and much swearing at the completely useless map which showed not a sign of the road we were allegedly on…After much toing and froing we found ourselves in downtown Bordeaux and after an almost futile search for the hotel (again, crap Google map directions which included roads that didn’t exist and one way streets that we were instructed to go down…the wrong way). Eventually we repaired out for a small snifter and in search of some dinner. Both of which were taken with gusto!
And those of you who know me know how much I LOVE a French tree…
We ate moules frites (well I didn’t), drank copious amounts of wine (yes, that WAS me) and had a jolly nice evening.
And next morning on we went – to St Emilion. Oh my!
If ever there was a more brilliant example of wine country then this is it. Endless vistas of vineyards stretching as far as the eye could see. Endless signs inviting one to come and taste – which sadly we had to forego as we were on a road trip (don’t fret Dear Reader, we did make up for it in the evenings!). It was a misty moisty morning and the photos do reflect this..
A very very pretty town
And on to here for night two – Chateau Isabeau Naujan – a wonderful place in the middle of its own vineyard and miles from anywhere. Luckily they also had a rather fabulous restaurant and so we settled in for the night…
Next day, fully refreshed we made our way further south and en route had lunch on the riverside at Cahors. I had bought one of those picnic rucksack thingys and very useful it proved to be too! Great bread, more cheese than you could shake a cheesy stick at and we were lunched up on more than one occasion.
All a bit Rapunzel really…
And there I shall leave you Dear Reader. For now. Before you nod off. Still to come on the epic trip – Carcassonne, Provence and the jolly old Cote d’Azur. Watch this space!
